The new MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar may be causing mixed reviews among the technology world, will integration for Logic Pro X and other DAW be productive?
Apple has informed an AppleInsider that Touch Bar support for audio production software will be available in early 2017. Other DAW developers such as Propellerhead and Image Line, have not let confirmed their support for the Touch Bar yet.
The question is, how will the Touch Bar benefit your workflow as a producer?
The Touch Bar is a very small OLED Screen which can be assigned to perform different roles on the MacBook Pro. The aim of this is to increase your workflow on any application you use.
Having access to control the little things in DAW software such as recording, playing or pausing using the Touch Bar, would definitely increase your workflow. It may seem like a gimmick, because it only takes a few seconds to move your mouse to click play. On the other hand, it would indefinitely be quicker to just tap the Touch Bar!
Now there are many features in which producers would like, which developers may not place in their software. Pitch-bend is a popular feature used in DAW’s which many producers overlook. Nevertheless, it would be handy to have this on the Touch Bar. Making your 808’s pop would be much easier if this feature was added for producing on the go when you don’t always have a MIDI controller with you.
Which leads onto adding a MIDI controller to the Touch Bar. May seem a bit creative here, but tapping on your keyboard doesn’t always work, especially when latency wants to show its head. However, having a MIDI controller built into the Touch Bar, creating a drum loop using basic imaginary pads would be productive.
Above all, investing in the new MacBook Pro would only benefit producers if we are afforded customisation from the developers. If the developers create set buttons for us to use, then we are limited to their ideas.
Creating an editor similar to MIDI controller editors, will make producing on the new MacBook Pro beneficial for users. Having freedom to place what buttons you want, is paramount to the value of investing in the new MacBoook Pro.
Otherwise the new TouchBar is just a gimmick.
