Balance Beat Making with your Work & Personal Life

Good Evening pro’s. DG here with more food for thought Between Two Monitors.

Today’s thought is about balancing the demands of everyday life with the desire to make beats.

We all love making music here, its clear because who would be reading blogs on a subject they have no love for? Not me because I don’t have any spare time.

It’s a common call for people to wish for more hours in the day. Whether you’re in school, working in a mall, office, construction site or trap trap trapping in the Bando, time runs away from us all. Even worse for those working and raising a family at the same time. Finding the time to make some magic can be sparse.

Admittedly, it would be great to relieve ourselves of responsibilities and be paid direct from our passions. The reality is, we have may people who depend on us financially. Plus we also depend on ourselves to provide a roof over our heads, until we create a strong enough income to switch over.

For myself, I was at Uni studying full time, working 22+ hours a week and going gym 5 days a week. So free time after meal prepping and practicing piano left me very little time to make music. But I found a way out. I knew that for me, I could function on very little sleep. I was happy to take out an hour each night, stop socialising with my housemates to open up Reason and create.

This was ok for practicing the craft, but in terms of really getting down into a deep session; this rarely happened. As a result, I have a hard drive full of unmixed music labelled horribly. But at the same time I was able to practice my craft and improve my skills.

Nowadays, I wake up and write articles & then source Samples and SoundPacks for you guys. Then I run an efficient website design company for you music producers. Making music gets left until 4am when I can’t resist the calls of Reason.  (Plus I have to make sure that the sounds I upload are high enough quality, so I do technically have an excuse to have a break 😉 )

For me this isn’t perfect, but it’s an example that even though life throws us demands, there is still opportunity to squeeze in a session if you are committed to it. If you have no time this week, are you going out to party Friday night? Or are you going to make the beat that shows everyone you mean business?

You are only ever one session away from creating a hit. You just need to prioritise your life to fit in your passion when you can.

Below is a video that is really popular, but ET TheHipHop Preacher is one of the guys I turn to when my motivation runs low. Please check it out and see if you don’t feel ready to go all night making music.

The point of this post was not for me to ramble on. But to let you guys and gals know Yes it is hard to balance, and there is no magic formula. We all live different lives, but at the end of the day we all share a passion for this thing called music. So in the words of Michael Jordan ‘ Just… Never… Give… Up

Let me know below in the comments how you balance life and producing!

  1. I’ve been browsing online more than 2 hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.
It is pretty worth enough for me. In my opinion, if all web owners and bloggers made
good content as you did, the internet will be a lot more useful than ever before.
